Beijing, 12 May 2016 - The Energy Storage China 2016 trade fair – an event co-located with the 5th International Conference and Expo on Energy Storage and Microgrids in China – ends today. ESC 2016 is an annual event supported by the National Energy Administration, and is organized by Messe Düsseldorf (Shanghai) Ltd. and the China Energy Storage Alliance. The event was held under the theme of “Energy Storage Supports the Energy Transformation, and Promotes China’s Energy Reform.”
A new and improved conference and trade show, driving the future of energy storage
ESC 2016 attracted 2,186 professional visitors from 12 countries attended this year's trade fair.Over 80 speakers, and 30 exhibitors with 50 media representatives were in attendance – including government institutions, energy storage system manufacturers, power companies, generation groups, grid companies, power transmission and distribution operators, grid system operators, system integrators, new energy manufacturers, and investment agencies.
Mr. Matt Roberts, Executive Director of the Energy Storage Association, delivered a keynote presentation on the trends and drivers shaping the energy storage industry in the United States.Commenting on the ESC 2016 conference, he remarked, “This is very similar to when I took over my organization three years ago. Since then, we’ve grown about three times. So I think that we can expect very similar things from this event, to continue to grow very rapidly.”
Mr. Heiko M. Stutzinger, Deputy General Manager of Messe Düsseldorf (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., said,"Since its inception in 2012, Energy Storage China has grown alongside China's energy storage sector. This year, we held an expo focusing on energy storage and microgrids in China to showcase emerging technologies as well as highlight the latest market trends. We are expecting an even larger exhibition next year at Energy Storage China 2017."
World-class experts and Chinese policymakers exploring the future of energy storage
ESC 2016 conference featured three forums and three seminars to explore various energy storage business models. The conference themes and topics included "Electricity Retail Models under New Power Sector Reforms," "Global Energy Storage Market Update and Outlook," "Energy Storage and the “Internet of Energy,” “Energy Storage Demand Analysis and Technology Solutions," "Distributed PV and Energy Storage," and "Advanced Energy Storage Technologies." In keeping with tradition, CNESA also released their sixth annual Energy Storage White Paper.
Mr. Xiu Binglin, deputy director of the Energy Conservation and Technology Department of the National Energy Administration, said, "This year’s 13 th Five-Year Plan emphasized the importance of building a modern energy system. It is also the first five-year plan to include advanced energy storage in the list of emerging technologies. It references important energy storage research, demonstration, and industrialization developments that are making energy storage emerge as a key component of a modern energy system.”
Johnson Yu, Chairman of China Energy Storage Alliance:" We’ve seen an amazing shift in China’s energy storage sector as policymakers continue to actively support the industry. There is lots of good news coming from the Chinese government with regards to energy. We foresee accelerating growth in the next three years, and within five years we expect breakthroughs in quality, costs, and financing to drive robust industry expansion."
Mr. Wu Zongxin, Counselor of the State Council, said, "Firstly, China will continue to develop its energy system. Secondly, our future main source of electricity is likely to be from renewable energy. This trend will increase the need for energy storage. The Energy Storage China conference and expo has an significant role in promoting industrial development in energy storage, making itimportant to China’s energy transformation
An international exhibition space bringing together industry leaders
As the sole exhibition and conference for grid-scale energy storage in China, Energy Storage China 2016 has attracted well-known and innovative companies, including TÜV Rheinland, Sifang Automation, Hydrogenics, Shandong Sacred Sun, NGK, Shanghai Smart Energy, Shuangdeng Group,Menshine, Today Energy, ABB, and many others.
Mr. Chen Zhi, Deputy General Manager of Marketing at Sungrow, a partner of Samsung SDI,remarked, "I was very happy to participate in the ESC 2016 conference and expo. It’s a great event bringing together industry leaders, policymakers and scholars together to brainstorm. ESC 2016 has been a great success, and has a far-reaching influence. Bringing people together to explore the future of energy storage's has an important role in promoting the industry."
Opportunities for hands-on learning
In order to better understand on-the-ground applications of energy storage in China, Messe Düsseldorf (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and China Energy Storage Alliance organized a site visit on May 13 th to a technology park north of Beijing near the Great Wall, the Yanqing Microgrid Project. The project is a government-supported demonstration project including a 2 MW solar PV system, 60 kW of wind capacity, and 2.5 MW (3.7 MWh) of various types of energy storage, including lithium-ion batteries, zinc-bromine flow batteries, super-capacitors, and lead-carbon batteries.
The trip brought together more than 50 professional trade visitors to exchange knowledge and learn about energy storage deployments in China.
With strong backing by the Chinese government and the Global Energy Storage Alliance, the China Energy Storage Alliance and Messe Düsseldorf are proud to organize Energy Storage China as part of the World of Energy Storage event series. As the driving force behind the anchor event for the global energy storage industry, Messe Düsseldorf Group has successfully held World of Energy Storage events covering North America, Europe, India, Japan and China. These events help industry professions understand global trends, analyze policy directions, promote new products and technologies, explore new business models, and capture market opportunities.
